Community Outreach Ministries

Community Outreach Ministries are among the ways in which the Spirit is at work in us and with us. Opportunities to participate and serve at NOCC and beyond are plentiful!

BACKPACKS
Each week from September through May, we deliver backpacks full of nutritious food for the entire family to Bell Prairie Elementary School children whose families are “food insecure” on weekends. For holidays, we provide gift cards to Sun Fresh grocery store, our community partner in providing food for families.

CHERITH BROOK MINISTRY WITH THE HOMELESS
Cherith Brook Ministries in Northeast Kansas City receives support from our congregation in the form of donated goods, and volunteer efforts. Also, please see UPDATES FROM CHERITH BROOK, their monthly newsletter, for suggestions on how you might help.

CHRISTMAS ADOPTIONS
We “adopt” several Bell Prairie Elementary children and provide gifts for each child.

FAMILY PROMISE OF THE NORTHLAND
Family Promise of the Northland is a nonprofit organization committed to help unhoused and housing insecure families and individuals in Clay and Platte Counties achieve self-sufficiency.

North Oak Christian Church volunteers are assisting with meal preparation and service, assisting participants with personal hygiene needs and laundry, financial support, and donating and sorting clothing. As all volunteers are encouraged to follow Covid protocols and vaccination requirements, we are one of many valued area partnerships that remain dedicated in the efforts to help meet the needs and protect the health of under-served people in our community. For a look back at the ongoing services and volunteer participation from NOCC and other Northland partners click here.

FULLER CENTER FOR HOUSING
We are active participants in this ministry which builds/rehabs homes for low income families. Fuller Center was founded by Millard Fuller, the founder of Habitat for Humanity.

GATEWAY 6TH GRADE CENTER PANTRY
We provide emergency packs of food for families in crisis at Gateway 6th Grade Center.

PARENTS AS TEACHERS
Parents As Teachers, sponsored by the North Kansas City School District, supports parents of young children through sharing information about child development and providing services such as toy and book libraries. NOCC works with Parents As Teachers by volunteering on an as-needed basis and by purchasing some of the requested items.

SOCIAL JUSTICE SEEKERS
This group meets regularly in support of North Oak’s vision to “intentionally and proactively engage with marginalized communities” by working to eradicate destructive ideologies such as homophobia, sexism, and racism. We seek to live God’s Kingdom by advocating for the needs of the oppressed, the ostracized, and the marginalized within the greater Kansas City area.
